Xm and Sirius Still Facing Uphill Battle

Author: <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" title="Michael C. Podlesny" 'href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/'michael-c-podlesny/32997">Michael C. Podlesny

As an XM subscriber myself, I have argued the fact that I really don’t need 3 comedy channels and 4 hip-hop stations, so why I am being charged for these. I would rather reduce my rate and pick only the stations I like to listen to. Apparently I am not alone as other consumers think the same way, and so the satellite companies are now offering up a plan to its customers, but more importantly a plan that will make it easier for the merger of XM and Sirius to go through.

Dream no more. In a recent article by Harry Stoffer in Automotive news he says, Satellite radio providers Sirius Satellite Radio Inc. and XM Satellite Radio Inc. will offer eight programming packages to give more choices to listeners in the U.S. The plan enables subscribers to choose 50 channels for 25 cents each per month. Some service packages would comprise news and talk channels. Among the proponents of the merger proposal between the two firms is the National Association of Broadcasters and Consumers Union of the United States Inc.

This “a-la-carte” pricing plan will allow consumers to pick and choose the stations they want. An offer satellite companies have presented to allow their merger to go through.

However not all are happy with the satellite merger between the companies, saying it would be a monopoly. Brooks Boliek reported in the July issue of Hollywood Reporter that reports on the debate over the proposed Sirius-XM deal which would reduce the satellite radio industry to one provider. The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) argues that the merger would harm consumers by creating a government-sanctioned monopoly. Also, the Consumer Federation of America, Consumers Union, Common Cause and Free Press have asked the U.S. Federal Communications Commission to reject the companies` proposal to define the market.

Herb Kohl, chairman of the Judiciary Antitrust Subcommittee is urging the Justice Department and the Federal Communications Commission to reject the merger of XM and Sirius satellite radio services in the U.S. Kohl said that there is a need to reject the $13 billion merger due to the insufficient viable competitive alternative to satellite radio.

The satellite radio stations of course are not going down without a fight. With the impending challenges they face in regards to their merger, XM and Sirius have hired lobbyists and advisers to plead their case on Capitol Hill. "We continue to believe we will ultimately receive the necessary approvals," Hugh Panero, chief executive officer of XM, said during a conference call on Apr. 26 with Olga Kharif of Business Week Online.

Supporters and critics of the proposed merger of satellite radio providers Sirius and XM will testify before the U.S. Senate Commerce Committee. Sirius CEO Mel Karmazin said that the merger, which was prohibited when the U.S. Federal Communications Commission approved the companies` licenses, would help satellite radio survive. Critics claim that the companies are asking for a government-blessed monopoly.

With the opposition by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission to the proposed merger and declining stock prices Wall Street doesn’t agree with Panero’s sentiments.

Hid Xenon Conversion Kit is the Choice of Popular Car Manufacturers

Author: <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" title="Cherryl Anne Cruz" 'href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/'cherryl-anne-cruz/114570">Cherryl Anne Cruz

There really isn’t any doubt that H.I.D. bulbs are gaining a lot of appeal in the automotive industry. Ask most luxury car owners and it’s one of the things they have included in their “To Buy” list. In fact, some even prefer to buy cars with installed HID lamps already. These bulbs have slowly become a household name in the industry -- thanks to the right combination of style and safety that it is becoming known for.

Due to its popularity, a lot of manufacturers are also starting to install these lights in their vehicles. Here are some known brands that use HID Xenon Conversion Kits.

Acura

When you buy xenon lights, ask for the “xenon package.” HID Kits only introduced in their factory recently, that’s why they mostly deal with aftermarket Xenon conversion kits. Some models who can carry these kits are Acura Integra, Acura RSX, Acura MDX, Acura TL, Acura RL, Acura RDX, Acura EL, Acura TSX, Acura Vigor, Acura CL. Acura NSX, are now able to have xenon Kit installed onto them, even if they were not equipped to do so.

Audi

Audi HID Kit easily found on the market compared to other cars. You can choose from different bulb sizing to fit your headlights, low beam or high beam, and also your fog lights.

BMW

Xenon Kits have been placed in BMW’s since mid to late 90’s, and it has been a pattern for most of their models ever since. BMW installs offers HID kit options on their following vehicles: BMW E36 1992-1999, BMW E46 2000- 2006, BMW E90 2005 to present, BMW E32 1987-1994, BMW E38 1994- 2001, BMW E34 1987- 1996, BMW E60 and E61 2004- present, BMW E65 and E66 2002- 2007, BMW E63 and E64 2004 – present, BMW Z1, BMW Z3, BMW Z4, BMW X3, BMW X5, BMW X6.

BMW also offers HID upgrades for many of their new cars. But they don’t offer xenon for older cars. This is the reason why the aftermarket industry offers BMW Xenon kits in the market today. They are designed to be a complete plug and play kit, so it would be easy for drivers to install it themselves.

Cadillac

Cadillac xenon lights are now available through an aftermarket supplier. The Kit is ready to install, and uses the plug and play system.

Chevy

Chevy models that have these kits include the Tahoe, Silverado, Malibu, Surburban, HHR, C-1500 Pickups and other great cars made by Chevy.

Jaguar

The Jaguar models you can install these kits into are the S-type, X-type, XF, XJ6, XJ6, XJR, XJ8, and XK8.

Mercedes

Mercedes introduces these kits as an OEM upgrade on certain models of their vehicles. Aftermarket Mercedes Xenon Conversion Kits are designed to be a complete plug and play for Mercedes cars, SUVs, and minivans. They come in many different bulb sizes such as; H1, H3, H4, H7, h23, 9004, 9005, 9006, 9007, D1S, D2S, H1, H3, H4-1, H7, 9004-1, 9005, 9006, 9007-1.

HID Conversion Kits lights are definitely making its presence known in the automotive industry. Many car aficionados and manufacturers agree: The combination of style and safety that these kits offer truly gives them an edge in bringing quality and substance to the forefront of modern technological innovation.

Sirius Goes Portable with Home Docking Stations and Satellite Accessories

Accessories for XM and Sirius Satellite radios are abundant. There are tons to choose from, and every time you turn around it seems there's something new! Speakers, car kits, home kits, mp3 players, portable players, headphones, and arm bands. Here are a few of the more popular satellite radio accessories available on the market, including home docking stations.

Home docking stations are very popular. These are available for all of the major satellite radio service companies, and there is one for just about any budget. The concept is simple; just take the tuner from your car, snap it into a docking station in your home, and you are ready to continue listening to your favorite satellite radio programming in the comfort of your home, dorm room, or even your office! You can get these kits in small boom box styles, and larger multi speaker home entertainment center styles. These home docking stations range in price from as low as $40 to as much as $300 or more when purchased new. Home antennas are also popular, so that you can receive clearer, stronger signals inside your home with your satellite radio tuners and home docking kits.

Other accessories available include headphones, cases for portable players, small speakers for portable units, armbands, and you can even buy antennas that are painted specially to match your vehicle color, rather than having a plain black antenna sticking out of your car. For some of the satellite radio companies even offer kits to turn any FM tuner into satellite radio! You can also buy remote controls for just about any tuner, if it doesn't already come with one, so you won't have to get off the couch or out of bed to change the programming.

Most of the accessories that are most popular right now are designed for portability, with both of the major satellite radio service providers, XM and Sirius offering portable satellite tuners, and there are some that will play both satellite programming and MP3's. The manufacturers and satellite radio companies have made it easy for you to take your satellite programming with you. Everything from small tuners meant for portability to small speakers to keep on your desk are available, in every budget range.

Research your accessory choices before you go to the store so that you won't be tempted to buy every last neat accessory you see. Make a budget, and stick to it! Buy the satellite radio accessories that you need and/or want the most first, the others can come later!

BMW E46 Radio Installation Kit

Author: <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" title="Jack Wylde" 'href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/'jack-wylde/272443">Jack Wylde

BMW is a well known automaker in the world. It launches some of the world's popular executive and luxury vehicles. The cars come in different series like 1, 3, 5, 6, 7. BMW E 46 is of the series 3. It was launched in the year 1998 and became a huge success. There were small changes made from its predecessor E 36 and were manufactured till the year 2006 after which E 90 replaced it. The BMW E46 was launched worldwide simultaneously in different forms of sedan and convert able. In the year 2002, almost four years after its release its sales shot up to five hundred thousand. The car had a much more powerful engine than its predecessors and had some great modifications in its aesthetic looks as well. The transmissions were of two types and either could be chosen.

There was a manual 6 speed transmission and a sequential gearbox which was manual too. It offered many styles like 2 door hatchback, 5 door sedans, and convertable. The engine layout was front type and it had an option of both rear wheel controlled and all wheel drive. The customer has the choice to select from both of the above. The manufactured parts of the car body were assembled at many of its plants in Germany, Austria, Russia, South Africa, China, etc. The predecessor E 36 had a cornered chassis. This chassis was modified in E 46 and made it more efficient by making it more streamline to minimize the friction. The major change in the E 46 was the reduction in weight and therefore making the engine to run the vehicle much faster with the same power. For reducing the weight and maintaining the strength of the car, aluminium was used as the material of construction for the exterior of the car.

The cars could run on both petrol and diesel. In the petrol cars, the acceleration was very high. A speed of 100 kilometers per hour was attained in less than five seconds. In diesel cars, 100 kilometers per hour could be reached in about 10 seconds. Between the years 1998 and 2003 few model were released with slight modifications in each. In 1999, model named 316 was released. It had a very basic engine with very low output of all the in E 46. It had 1.9L engine and had four cylinders. It produced a torque of 175 Newton meter. The model 318 introduced in 1998 but had a change in 2001. It produced torque and power more than the 1998 version.

Any BMW car is known for its luxury features and offers amazing radio dash kit. The older versions of the car have radio with 17 pin harness wire. This is used to connect the head unit to the auxiliary unit. This also enables the customer to use ipod and mp3 player. It also comes with facia kits to make the apertures suitable for using any stereo set. There are adaptors that are available to make non DIN sized openings to standard DIN size. This is all you need to change the OEM radio to a modern aftermarket MP3 player.

Sirius vs XM: Who's King?

Author: <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" title="Jonathan Baldwin" 'href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/'jonathan-baldwin/5409">Jonathan Baldwin

As far as the numbers go, XM radio is beating Sirius for sheer number of subscribers. However, if you look at the recent subscriptions, Sirius is clearly gaining more subscribers than XM. So which is better?

If the consumer's dollar is a vote for the product they like, as economists suggest, then the consumer says XM was the better, but now Sirius is the top dog. The reason? The new Sirius S50, better talk radio involving Howard Stern and Martha Stewart grabbing both sides of the spectrum, and a bold new marketing campaign for their secret weapon the S50: "We Know What You're Thinking".

The slogan "we know what you're thinking" comes probably from the way they researched the product: they hired a research team to follow people around and find a way to integrate Sirius radio into their lives. While many think it over-the-top to declare themselves psychic, the marketing worked perfectly: it got the consumer curious. Retailers around the nation are saying the reason for Sirius' gains in momentum is clearly tied around the tiny handheld Satellite Radio player.

The player allows the user to set it in a docking bay and download the high-quality satellite radio recordings onto MP3 format and can be taken portably with you whereever you go. The Sirius S50's size is about 4 inches by 2 inches, and the player weights roughly 6 ounces. Pretty amazing for the handheld "Sirius portable", and the price of the object is placed at a perhaps sobering $280. Yet with their flurries of promotions such as rebates or other offers the weight is slightly lessened. That said, the legally free, high quality MP3's definitely pay for the product

Aside from the new S50 we have all fallen in love with, Sirius offers a lineup of sports, talk radio, and critically praised music selections that is sure to sweeten the relationship. Also, a big positive aspect of Sirius is what it doesn't have much of: negative consumer reactions. Sirius has very few satellite-to-receiver issues, whereas competitor XM's receiver tends to have a volume shift now and then, which for me, has always been a big factor. Sirius, on the other hand, has crisp reception, even in some tunnels!

With the new Sirius S50, among all the other great advantages, it has become quite apparent that Sirius satellite radio is no longer the underdog. XM Radio better act quickly or they risk losing their leading status.

How To Install A New Radio In Mazda 6

Author: <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" title="Jack Wylde" 'href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/'jack-wylde/272443">Jack Wylde

There are many models of Mazda 6 and people try to upgrade its stereo from time to time. There are many generations in this and techies always like to keep themselves updated with the latest technology. But before selecting the newer versions of radios and replacing, the first step is to remove the former radio. This articles deals on how to remove the radio from Mazda 6. The steps that are given in this article can be worked on with models that were released between the years 2003 and 2008.

This is almost common for the above models and there are some tools that will come handy while doing this task. Pliers, wrench and a screwdriver all of appropriate sizes are some things that are needed.

The first thing to be done is to put the gear in the neutral so that it is safe till the work is completed. Also use the cars parking brake to put it in stationary position. Then, the engine is turned off and the battery is disconnected. This can be done by popping up the hood, and removing the negative end of the cars battery. The gear is kept neutral so that the console can be removed with no problems.

The next thing is to remove the shift knob of the gear. The knob can be removed by twisting it in the counter clockwise direction. The centre of the console can be snapped off. Then, the cupholder is removed by grabbing on it. This console generally extends in to ashtray of the car. Once the console is removed, there are two other screws that become visible. Remove these screws. It is actually below the panel of climate control.

The glove compartment is opened to gain access to the side-mounted bold of the radio. The sides of this compartment are squeezed simultaneously, and are made to be dropped down. Once this is done, the screws that are seen can be removed.

The assembly of the climate control is entirely removed. This panel also includes the middle covers of the air vent. Once this cover is removed, it is turned over and the remaining screws twelve in number that mounts the radio with the air vent and other climate control are removed. When these screws are removed fully, the radio is free to be removed. After the radio is removed, do the above steps in the reverse order to assemble the parts. The dash is placed and all the screws are screwed back. The gear is then shifter in to the park mode. The battery of car is again reconnected. The negative wire is again placed on the battery and tightened.

This article therefore throws light on all aspects of removing the battery and the radio. It is essential to remove the battery to prevent any case of short circuit in the car while working on this removal. Now you know how to remove the radio from Mazda 6, you can do it on your own with the instructions of this article.

Radio Wave Propagation Models Used in RF Coverage Analysis

Author: <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" title="Paul Ngai" 'href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/'paul-ngai/173856">Paul Ngai

Radio wave propagation can be categorized as LOS (Line Of Sight) and non-LOS modes. LOS is direct point-to-point propagation with no obstructions in between. Non-LOS is indirect propagation in the absence of LOS path which consists of diffraction, reflection and scattering. In the HF band (3 – 30 MHz), propagation is primarily using sky wave for long distance communications. VHF and UHF (30 MHz – 3 GHz) waves travel by LOS and ground bounce propagation. The SHF (3 to 30 GHz) wave uses strictly LOS propagation.

The goal of propagation modeling is to determine the probability of satisfactory performance of a wireless system that depends on radio wave propagation. For RF systems planning, the modeling of propagation is for the purpose of RF coverage analysis. This analysis uses the propagation model and terrain data to predict the RF coverage area of a transmitter, the received signal strength at the end of a wireless link, the path loss from the transmitter to a distance receiver, the antenna tilt angle of the transmitter, the minimum antenna height to establish Line of Sight communication path and channel impairment such as delay spread due to multi-path fading.

Propagation models for different applications, environments and terrains had been developed by the US government, private organizations and standard body such as International Telecommunications Union (ITU). These models are based on large amount of empirical data collected for the purpose of characterizing propagation for that application. Since propagation models are created using statistical methods, no single model will exactly fit any particular application. It is a good idea to employ two or more independent models and use the results as bounds on the expected performance. The following are a list of most commonly used near-earth propagation models.

Longley-Rice
The Longley-Rice model predicts long term median transmission loss over irregular terrain. It is designed for frequency from 20 MHz to 20 GHz and path length from 1 to 2000 Km. The model accounts for terrain, climate, subsoil conditions and ground curvature. Longley-Rice model has two modes, point-to-point and area. The point-to-point mode uses detail terrain data and characteristics to predict path loss, whereas the area mode uses general information about the terrain characteristics to predict path loss.

Okumura
The Okumura model is based on the measurements made in Tokyo in 1960, between 200 to 1920 MHz. The measured values are used to determine the median field strength and numerous correction factors. The correction factors include adjustment to the degree of urbanization, terrain roughness, base station antenna height, mobile antenna height and localized obstruction. The Okumura model is especially applicable in urban area for general coverage calculation where numerous obstructions and buildings exist.

Cost 231
The Cost 231 Model, also called the Hata model PCS extension, is used in most commercial RF planning tools for mobile telephony. The coverage of the Cost 231 model is frequency between 1500 to 2000 MHz, transmitter effective antenna height between 30 to 200 m, receiver effective antenna height between 1 to 10 m and link distance from 1 to 20 km. The Cost 231 model is restricted to application where the base station antenna is above adjacent roof tops.

Egli
The Egli model is a simplified model based on empirical match of measured data to mathematical formula. Its ease of implementation makes it a popular choice for use in the first analysis. It assumes gentle rolling hill height of approximately 50 feet and no terrain elevation data between the transmitter and receiver is needed for the model. The median path loss is adjusted for the height of transmit and receive antenna above ground. The model consists of a single equation for the propagation loss.

ITU
ITU terrain model is based on diffraction theory that provides a method to predict median path loss. The model predicts path loss as a function of the height of path blockage and the first Fresnel zone for the transmission link. The model is ideal for modeling line-of-sight link in any terrain and is good for any frequency and path length. The model accounts for obstructions in the middle of the communication link, hence it is suitable to be used both inside cities and open fields. The model is considered valid for losses above 15 dB.

Sirius and XM: Satellite Radio in America

Author: <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" title="Galen Bass" 'href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/'galen-bass/194829">Galen Bass

There are two major companies that offer satellite radio in America: Sirius and XM.
XM was the first company that offered satellite radio. It has two satellites named Rock and Roll and it has its studios in Washington D.C. Sirius Radio has three satellites and has its studios in New York As the XM was first, it has 3,2 hundred thousand, but Sirius brings competition with 1,1 hundred thousand subscribers in the present time.

Satellite radio is by far the best radio ever, making the AM/FM radios look old and dying even. This new era of radio has a lot of advantages that will please you at the maximum.
As the income comes from the subscribers not from advertisements, there are no commercials, no one is saying what to buy, no one is promoting their channel and no one is interrupting you from listening to what you want, where you want. There a lot of choices in want to listen to as both XM and Sirius have a big programming variety that includes music channels of world music(pop, rock, classical, rap, hip-hop, opera, country, western, jazz, dance, blues, Latin), weather, news, traffic, sports and entertainment channels. Local weather and traffic channels are available only for major cities in the U.S.A. provided by the two companies and every five minutes you can hear updates. The best thing in all channels is that there are uncensored. So, you can listen to uncensored stand-up comedy and hip-hop channels, at least for now.

The satellite radio has a very good sound quality, no static and no interference, a quality that may be compared with the one of a CD. The radio is based on a go/no-go system based on the strength of the signal. So, weak signal may cause dropouts.
You can easily get information about songs and artists right on you satellite radio receiver that can also help you select channels and categories. This makes it easier for you to choose the exact channel or song you want to hear. So, whenever you are wondering what song or channel you are listening to just read the information that the receiver shows.

Now you can get satellite radio wherever you like, eventough at first it was design only for car use. With the right equipment you can easily have radio, but it depends on you whether you subscribe at XM or Sirius. Unfortunately, you can't use a satellite radio turner for both XM and Sirius. There are three types of turners depending on where you want to listen to satellite radio. The Plug-and-play turner can be used out-door wherever you like as long as you have a portable boombox that can receive the signal. There are turners especially made for using them in cars and the home satellite radio turners for using them at home.

Both companies want now to offer a video service. This is planned to happen in the second half of the year 2006 and will include at first two video programs designed for children. Satellite radios' prices start at about $75.A subscription costs 12.95 per month wherever you want to subscribe as both XM and Sirius radio charges the same. There a couple of discounts like you can get satellite radio for a year at $9.95/month or Sirius is offering a subscription for a lifetime at $500.
