This is probably why VH1 created "Behind the Music," and also why the show was one of the most watched programs on the station for most cable and satellite TV viewers.

Always starting out with the same narration, theme music and dramatic style montage, "Behind the Music" chronicled the life and times of some of the most famous bands to ever record music. The show had a long life span on VH1 from 1997 to 2006, but somehow got cancelled due to its general predictability and shear fact they covered over 150 bands. Lately, however, the show has seen a revival on cable and satellite TV, due to both high ratings on VH1 Classic and the recent new, high definition episodes covering Pink, Lil Wayne and T.I. Therefore, it seems like the world has not seen the end of the program.

Generally, the show profiled the bands, artists and groups that had already broken up, from the classics such as the Doors and Kiss to more modern groups such as the Backstreet Boys and the Spice Girls. Since more often than not drugs or alcohol were the cause for a group's eventual break-up, the repetitive stories and episodes caused the program to get a bit bland. Overall, viewers learned that it is hard enough to break-in to the music industry and find fame, but it is even harder to not let that success get into your head.

At the same time, the cable and satellite TV program was such a tour de force on VH1 that it officially carved a place for itself in popular culture. Granted, VH1 claims itself to be a pop culture channel, but the show's success and predictability allowed it to be not only referenced by many articles chronicling a band's history, but also made fun of by such programs as "South Park" and "Family Guy." How Does Satellite TV Work?

Satellite TV is currently the best method to get the TV programming that you need for entertainment and enjoyment in your home.  It beats cable companies hands down – offering more channels, more HD channels, better pricing, better picture and better customer service.  When you look at it from that perspective, choosing satellite is a no-brainer.  However, many consumers are unsure just how satellite TV works. Satellite TV is much different from cable.  With cable TV, the transmitting station sends out the signal via ground wires that run into your home.  Satellite is very different.

Satellites – The TV signal that you receive in your home comes from satellites orbiting the earth.  However, it starts out from a transmitting station.  The station beams the signal to the satellite, which, in turn, beams the information directly to your home for your enjoyment. The satellites used for this purpose use a geosynchronous orbit, placing them above the equator.

Because they use a geosynchronous orbit, they remain in the same position at all times, rather than orbiting around the planet as it hurtles through space.
The placement of the satellites over the equator is no accident.  This allows them to have a much greater range of transmission when aimed at North America.  In fact, the signal can be received throughout the US and Canada, as well as much of Mexico.  Plans are in the works to extend that coverage to the equatorial regions, as well.

Transmitting satellites use different techniques to send the signal down to your home.  For instance, some use a single large spotter beam to transmit their signal to customers.  A better option is to use multiple spotter beams, which enables more customers to receive TV signal and results in a clearer picture, due to lower degradation.

The Dish – Those TV signals are beamed down to earth, where they are picked up by a satellite dish at your home.  The dish may be an 18-inch affair, or a 20-inch dish.  Regardless, they both work the same way.  Once that signal is received, it is transmitted via RG-6 coaxial cable into your home, to the receiver.  Once at the receiver, the signal is then sent on to the TV set and, viola, you have TV.

To take advantage of satellite TV, that satellite dish must be mounted in an area with a clear view of the southern sky.  Remember where those satellites orbited?  That's right; their signal comes from the south.  Therefore, any large trees, buildings or other obstructions may block or degrade your TV signal.  You can mount your dish on your roof, your chimney, the back of your home or it can even be freestanding in your backyard.

The Receiver – The receiver that you choose from your satellite provider is a big part of your enjoyment.  Different receiver models have different capabilities.  For instance, newer receivers can receive high definition TV signal.  As another example, advanced receivers come with an HD DVR, which allows you to record high definition and standard definition TV programming.  Obviously, the right receiver is vital to your enjoyment.

For a long time, those living in condos, apartments, and town homes had only one choice, their cable television, company, usually Time Warner Cable or Comcast. Most with private porches and balconies have been able to install a satellite dish out there and then connect to satellite TV programming. Recent decisions by the Federal Communications Commission have changed the rules in favor of satellite television providers like DirecTV and Dish Network.

If you live in a condo or apartment, and you just don't want to miss out on the NFL Sunday Ticket deal again this season, the first thing to do is inquire with your management company or land lord and ask about satellite TV. Many condo associations have been wired to share a satellite TV system already. This is the case in many big, multi-unit condominiums. In these situations, usually one or more satellite TV systems have already been placed on the top of the building, and then signals is transferred to a central distribution point in the building.

Now if your building doesn't have a shared satellite dish, you can ask if you can have your own satellite dish placed on the roof if its in close proximity to your condo, or on the top of the building itself if there is room there. At times, this is where issues can come up.. Property managers usually do not like a satellite dish attached to the top of their apartment unit. If they do not allow this, you still have options. If you have a patio or small deck that has a southern facing exposure, you can have the satellite system mounted on the railing out there.

A factors to consider here is if that area is a private balcony. If it is not shared, you can probably do whatever you desire with that area. If in doubt, you can also investigate things by simply walking around your apartment complex and see if your neighbors deck areas have satellite dish systems set up. If there are several satellites set up, there is not anything to prevent you from setting up your own satellite dish system for your condominium.

To avoid problems in getting your satellite dish installed, the installer may ask you to provide a permission paper, which says your apartment manager, HOA or landlord does not have any issues with the satellite dish being mounted appropriately.

The Best of Spike Jonze on Satellite TV

American director/actor/producer Spike Jonze ne Adam Spiegel got his start in the film business directing music videos and commercials. He was nominated by the Directors Guild of America for Outstanding Achievement in Commercials in 2005. He founded Dirt Magazine and worked as a photographer for several skateboarding outlets. He formed a dance group under an alternate persona called Richard Koufey. Currently, he’s creative director of VBS.tv. Here’s a look at his films and videos, which have all aired on satellite TV.

How They Get There: This is an early piece by Jonze. It’s actually a short film in which a woman and a milk carton and a man get into an awkward situation. There are only four cast members and the film lasts three minutes.

Amarillo by Morning: This is another short, this time a documentary. It follows, in one afternoon, two teenagers who aspire to be cowboys.

Torrance Rises: Jonze directed, wrote and acted in this short film. It’s a mockumentary of Jonze’s work with his self styled dance group and their work for Fatboy Slim’s song Praise You.

Being John Malkovich: This was Jonze’s breakout movie. It also marked the beginning of the director’s collaboration with writer Charlie Kaufman. Making its debut in 1999, Being John Malkovich touches on themes of being, self, perception and absurdity. In the movie, John Cusack, a puppeteer called Craig Schwartz, discovers a portal into the actor John Malkovich’s head. Anyone who goes inside the portal gets to be the actor, see what he sees, feel what he feels, etc, for 15 minutes, after which they are tossed onto the New Jersey turnpike. John Malkovich plays himself, incidentally. Schwartz decides to start a business out of this portal with his coworker, Maxine, played by Catherine Keener. A love triangle between Maxine, Lotte, Schwartz’s pet obsessed wife played by a frizzy haired Cameron Diaz, and also, to an extent John Malkovich, evolves. The movie was well received by audiences and critics alike. It often airs in HD on satellite TV.

Adaptation: Following on the success of Being John Malkovich, Jonze again paired up with writer Charlie Kaufman to direct this 2002 movie. It’s another sort of high definition meta-film, a meditation on being and self and the creative process. Adaptation stars Nicolas Cage as the twin brothers Charlie and Donald Kaufman (Charlie is supposed to be the writer of the movie). The movie follows the Kaufman brothers as they try to write a script for the Orchid Thief, a novel. Charlie is recruited to adapt the book during the filming of Malkovich; there’s a lot of self referential moments. In fact, the film is highly reflexive, looking back on itself, the art of writing and making films in general. Critics loved the movie as did audiences. Spike Jonze got an Oscar nom, as did Kaufman, Cage, and Meryl Streep who plays Susan Orleans, the author of the Orchid Thief.
