Satellite Radio: Music And More In Real Time

Author: Matt Barstow

Millions of radio listeners in the United States and all over the world have become so much happier with the introduction of satellite radio. Now, people can listen to literally hundreds of stations that offer music, news, radio talk shows and more in virtually real-time and at a much higher audio quality than that which FM or AM radio provides.

With conventional radio, land-based stations broadcast their signals to your boom box, computer, or car radio via the earth's airwaves. With satellite radio however, providers transmit encrypted signals to satellites they launched in outer space; these satellites in turn beam the signals to customers' listening devices. But you can't use just any radio; you need a special receiver (which is available at electronics retailers) and a satellite radio set. You can also listen to satellite radio broadcasts in your car since many new cars rolling of the assembly lines have satellite-ready equipment already installed. All you would need to do is pay for your monthly subscription.

In the United States, service is offered by XM Satellite Radio and Sirius Satellite Radio. Sirius, a company based in New York City, has over 125 channels from which to choose, 67 of them dedicated to commercial-free music and the rest to various other content. XM, on the other hand, offers more than 160 channels, which offer content that is as diverse as that which Sirius extends to its customers. The services are available coast-to-coast, so geographical availability of programs is not an issue. A customer in Los Angeles, for example, can listen to the same talk show that another customer in say, Boston, is listening to at the same time, and with no degradation in audio quality. Remember that satellite radio also means digital radio—sound is crystal-clear. There's none of the static or hissing you would sometimes hear on FM or AM radio. Non-US residents can also take advantage of the benefits of satellite radio; XM and Sirius offer their services in Canada, while WorldSpace broadcasts its service across Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. Australia has several providers of its own also.

Factors that attract people to sign up for satellite radio subscriptions are numerous. For one thing, there's the pleasure of listening to commercial-free music. Since the providers make their money from subscriptions, there is still no pressing need for advertising revenue. Another attractive feature that this service offers is that information about the song being played at the moment is displayed on your radio set—a small convenience for those people who have to know about who is singing what song right-now. The fact that satellite radio programming is completely uncensored at the moment is also a draw for many people. Noteworthy personalities, such as shock jock Howard Stern (who was kicked out of network radio programming) has made satellite radio his new broadcasting home. Whether you want to listen to hip-hop music, stand-up comedy shows, or news programs, satellite radio offers them—all completely uncensored.

Because Sirius, XM, and other providers are the ones who set the channel selections, some people might find it a bit inconvenient that they won't be able to listen to their local radio stations and get information on local goings-on. However, Sirius and XM do provide traffic and weather data for major cities, so that should be a bit of a relief for city residents. And if you think about it, not getting access to one local radio station wouldn't seem to be such a bad deal if you compare it to the ability to listen to hundreds of channels of commercial-free music and unregulated non-regulated shows.

Sirius and XM plan to add even more features and functions to offer to their subscribers. Sirius, in particular, is readying the launch of a Windows Media Video 9 service and the company plans to offer several channels dedicated to children. That's one more thing to keep the kids occupied and not distract their parents on long road trips. XM plans to release a similar video service. The two companies are anticipating that this will add to the number of their subscribers—Sirius has over one million, trailing after XM which has more than three million.

If you're an avid radio listener and you're finding yourself becoming fed up with the constant barrage of commercials on regular music stations or if you're looking for more no-holds-barred commentaries or radio talk shows, you probably wouldn't mind forking over the .95 monthly subscription for satellite radio service charged by Sirius and XM. And with the increases that the two companies see in their subscriber numbers, it's evident that a lot of people feel the same way.

Satellite Radio Care Tips

Author: Kyle Newton

The satellite radio is quickly garnering market share from old standbys, FM and AM. Only two service providers, XM and Sirius, the only real choice you have to make is which model to purchase and how much to pay. Road to XM and Sirius can have a few potholes, aggravating problems that may cause you to toss your Roadies out of the car window. We have few tips to help pave that road.

Always try refreshing the activation of your radio by going to the XM or Sirius websites and hitting refresh signal. Do check with customer service to make sure the radio has been properly activated. Sometimes the request doesn't get processed right away.

Always check your antenna and make sure it's connected to the proper input on the radio and can get a clear signal. Try to check the cable and connector for damage. Your radio won't receive a signal if you're in a garage or other area where the signal is blocked.

Do set your radio, in most cases to Channel 1, so it can acquire the stations from the satellite. Try to check to see if there's fringe interference from a nearby radio station, in this case, you'll hear either static from the station or voices and music will be heard faintly in the background. Numerous satellite radios are equipped with RF modulators, which use FM frequencies to deliver sound through your car's speakers. Always test the radio with several unused FM frequencies to find the clearest channel. If you get a weak signal and you're sure there's no interference, try relocating the antenna. Do use the car's cassette player to connect to your sound system. Unluckily not all brands of satellite radio come with a cassette adapter, but they're pretty easy to get. Only plug it into the audio out jack of your radio and pop the end with the cassette into the player. Always test your receiver with a home kit. When all of your stations come through loud and clear, there could be a problem with the RF modulator. Therein that case exchange the radio for a new one. Do check to see if your radio is locked, this may be the case if you can't change stations and a "lock" signal is displayed on the radio. We can turn this off on some radios by pressing the Mute/Pause/Lock button. When your radio doesn't have this, or it doesn't solve the problem, unlock it by inserting the end of a paper clip into the radio's reset hole.

Always reset the radio by inserting the end of a paper clip into the radio's reset hole to alleviate problems if the back light of the radio doesn't turn off or on or the radio's display doesn't change.

Satellite Radio, the New Frontier in Broadcasting

Author: Jerry Cahill

One of the mediums of mass communication, radio, is a gadget, which is the wireless transmission of signals, modulated of electromagnetic waves, which has less frequency than that of light. In today's world this radio has evolved into satellite radio (mainly an item of entertainment). Satellite Radio, which is also known as Pay Radio, Subscription radio, is a sort of digital radio, which is designed to receive signals, broadcasted by communication satellites. It has coverage of much wider geographical range, wider than other radio signals.

This type of radio is said to be using a band ranging from 1.4GHz to 2.3GHz in different places. It is said to transmit program-associated data abbreviated as PAD just like other radio services. Satellite Radio services is mostly commercial business body. They do not belong to private parties. SR services generally offer package of different channels, which requires subscription from the final users in order to get access to the channels. A monthly fee is charged for this subscription, which can be (according to American currency) in the area of . There are many providers of satellite radios in the world- SIRIUS, DELPHI, AUDIOVOX KENWOOD, PIONEER, etc. Among these the most noted and main Satellite Radio providers are WorldSpace in Europe, Asia, and Africa; XM Radio and Sirius in America. But XM Satellite Radio and Sirius Satellite Radio are considered the giants in the market. Apart from music channels they also have news, weather and sports channel also.

In this respect one should also know that satellite radios are different from AM (radio using Amplitude Modulation for its broadcasting) and FM (a broadcasting technology in which a radio uses frequency modulation mainly for broadcasting hi-fi sound on radio). The main difference is that satellite radios have highest varieties of programming than AM or FM radios.

For satellite radios one will find several kinds of receivers and the total cost for the radio depends upon that. The different types of receivers available are- home, car, portable, and computer. But it is suggested that if one wants minimum expense with maximum utilization it is best to go for home as long as you do not buy a car.

Almost all the producers and Satellite Radio service providers have options for cars, boats, RVs and home. Many are also offering walkman type Satellite Radios.

If you are a road warrior a satellite radio is the best way to assure access to your favorite genre no matter where you travel.

How Satellite Radio Works And Why It Is So Popular

Author: Gregg Hall

Radio broadcasting has grown volumes in the almost 15 years that have passed since the Untied States Federal Communications Commission made the S band (the 2.3 GH frequency) available for Digital Audio Radio Service. With an ability to broadcast with static free, high quality sound over a distance surpassing 20,000 miles, satellite radio is one of the most significant developments in the world of broadcasting since the launch of FM itself. Sirius, XM and WorldSpace, satellite radio companies, have capitalized on this technology and have brought it to the masses on a worldwide scale. But how it does satellite radio really work?

All satellite radio services have three things in common: the actual satellites, the ground repeaters, and the radio receivers. These components are used to broadcast the radio signal a customer hears after subscribing to a service. But each of these service providers (Sirius, XM and WorldSpace) utilizes a unique broadcasting system to deliver sound (radio signals) to the subscriber. For example, Sirius utilizes satellites that orbit the Earth in an oblong pattern. While this may seem irrelevant to the average listener, it's significant because Sirius' model makes it possible for satellites to reach higher in the sky and, thus, lose their signal less often than other providers do. XM, on the other hand, operates geostationary satellites that orbit the Earth in a synchronized pattern consistent with the planet's customary movements. Radio reception is attained and, to make it clearer, XM then uses a network of antennas that re-transmit the signal to avoid interruptions that have been known to occur near tall buildings, bridges or hills.

So know that we know how the radio signal itself is transmitted, when does the music get added to the mix? At the digital broadcast centers, where radio programmers are responsible for picking what song will be played when. These centers maintain music in both digital format and a CD format and often also have studio space where performers can be recorded and their sound transmitted, live. The extremely high quality sound that subscribers hear is made possible by a process called digital compression, a procedure in which algorithms (a set of rules developed to break down a problem, or process, into smaller, simpler steps) are used to squeeze as much sound as possible into the bandwidth available. Satellite radios are the only types of radios sophisticated enough to decode these signals, which is why a subscription is required and why you won't be able to access the same content through your everyday AM/FM dial. The exclusivity, quality of sound, popularity and commercial free features of satellite radio have all been key factors in making it possible for companies to offer satellite service at a reasonable price.

Serious Satellite Radio

Author: <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" title="Penny Sansevieri" 'href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/'penny-sansevieri/3832">Penny Sansevieri

The dynamics of media are changing drastically. TiVo has changed the way we watch TV and satellite radio has changed the dial on AM/FM, maybe for good. Regardless of what you believe or don't believe relative to the staying power of satellite radio, one thing is for sure. The power the consumer now has to tune out commercials and have access to hundreds of stations cannot be understated and will likely change radio forever. There are two giants in the satellite industry.

XM Radio and Sirius Satellite radio currently dominate the scene. Each boasts a steady stream of music and talk, but XM it would seem, tops out at having the most stations (including talk). Sirius has 125 while XM has 160 to their credit. Sirius is probably best known for their coup of luring Howard Stern away from traditional radio to the satellite world, but they also have Martha Stewart and several other talk programs. To compete, XM announced in 2005 that it had closed a $55 million dollar deal to get Oprah on their nationwide airwaves. "Oprah and Friends" is set to debut in September of 2006, and Good Morning America just launched the radio version of their morning show too, giving XM quite a bit of buzz.

When satellite radio first came on the scene it seemed like a novelty, something that would fade in time. But now, some three years into the satellite craze the listener base seems to be widening and with more and more new cars being sold with satellite radio already built in, the choice for many is clear. Most consumers will listen to a mix of traditional and satellite radio so pitching both makes sense. How do you pitch this type of radio? The same way you'd pitch traditional radio. Listen to their show, get a sense of their format and then contact the producer or host (depending on who takes pitches). If you're not a subscriber to satellite radio and wonder how you can listen to a show you might want to check their individual web sites. Often you can subscribe to their webcasting that will allow you to listen to programming via the Internet, this way you can listen to the shows a few times without incurring the cost of the sign up and equipment. You can visit their respective websites at: www.xmradio.com and www.sirius.com. Here is a sampling of the shows on both stations that welcome pitches from authors.

Xm Satellite Radio Replacing Free Radio?

Author: <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" title="Matt Barstow" 'href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/'matt-barstow/9355">Matt Barstow

Remember the days when we thought paying for our TV service was ridiculous? "Cable TV!", our mothers would exclaim, "Who has money to pay for their TV shows? It's been free all these years; I don't know why I would start paying for it now."

But that was then and this is now. Today we pay for cable or satellite and consider it a necessity in our lives, not a luxury. Sure, we could stick with "free" TV, but the reception would be bad, we'd only have 4-6 channels to choose from and there would be no CNN, no Food Network, and no ESPN. What would we do with ourselves?

So it seems a little reminder of those days when we hear people scoffing at the notion of paying for radio. "I've gotten it free all these years," you hear people exclaim. "Why would I pay for radio?"

Although satellite radio services have been around for a few years, its notoriety was spun into high gear when Howard Stern publicly made the jump from "free" radio to a satellite service in early 2006. Now, everyone's curious and many people are considering paying a bill every month for the privilege of listening to the radio.

Just like cable TV, there are many proprietary shows on satellite radio you just won't hear if you don't have a subscription. So you have to pony up to the extra bill bar...but what do you get for your extra dough?

Lots. Talk shows, music shows, entertainment, sports.

Some of the most talked about XM Satellite Radio shows are not music shows but talk shows. There are literally more than a dozen to choose from.

Consider Air America Radio (on channel 167), which features chatter from such well-known mouths as those belonging to Al Franken, Jerry Springer and actress Janeane Garofalo. Largely a progressive station, this dial also features veteran radio host Mark Riley and commentator Alan Colmes.

For the right slant on things, take a listen to America Right (on channel 166). This program features shows from such luminary conservatives as G. Gordon Liddy, Peter Greenburg, Dr. Laura and Michael Medved.

If politics aren't your bag, how about entertainment or humor? On XM Radio channel 162, you'll find the E! channel. Yes, this is the same E! we pay for on cable and the format is generally the same. There's the E! True Hollywood Story, E! news and celebrity profiles. Now you can get all your E! gossip and news while drinking Starbucks on your way to work. My, how the world has changed.

If you're into sports, XM Radio delivers. There's the Sporting News channel, the Nascar channel, the ESPN channel, and a wide variety of channels dedicated to various sports like baseball, football and even hockey. Though many channels feature talk and sports opinion, one of the big selling points for many sports fans is the live streaming games. In this case, you truly can take it with you.

Got kids in the car? Tune into Radio Disney or XM Kids, the winner of several parents' choice awards.

Amid all this talk, there is music on XM Radio. Lots and lots of music. There are alternative music channels, top 40 channels, channels for 60s music, 70s music, 80s music and 90s music. Interested in music from Sweden and Ireland? Check out channel 29, or U-Pop, dedicated to hits from around the world. Needs some romance in your life? Turn your dial to The Heart (XM channel 23), where you can enjoy Whitney Houston, Michael Bolton, Celine Dion and the like.

Is Satellite Radio For You?

Author: <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" title="Lee Dobbins" 'href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/'lee-dobbins/2221">Lee Dobbins

Well if you like to listen to music the answer is yes!

But you probably already have a radio that works quite nicely and are wondering why you might want to switch, right?

Satellite radio is a paid subscription - it works via a satellite feed so you can listen to the radio anywhere you want and there is no range restrictions so your favorite song won't become garbled with static as you drive down the road out of range.
It works like satellite television, except it can travel with you. A satellite radio can go in your home, your car or you can carry it around with you. It provides crystal clear digital sound no matter where you are and is commercial free.

Satellite radio can really open up the range and choices of music. With satellite radio subscriptions, you typically have access to several music channels, which reach all genres and subgenres of music. The best providers will also provide you dozens of channels for the latest news, talk radio, and information, along with local traffic and weather forecasts and all the sports events you could want.

XM Radio is rapidly growing and services over 2 million listeners providing 68 music channels.
