The Satellite Radio Service Experience

Author: Groshan Fabiola

Satellite radio services have been in the news for quite a while, and the two main providers in the United States have gained millions of subscribers. There are still billions of people who haven’t experienced the difference between a satellite radio system and a traditional radio, though. It may cost a few extra dollars, but satellite radio services offer much more than AM/FM radio.

The most obvious difference between satellite radio services and traditional radio is the hundreds of channels that are available. The two main satellite radio providers in the United States, Sirius and XM, each offer well over 100 channels to choose from. The channels are also practically commercial-free, save for a few station identifications. With so many channels available, the satellite radio services can cater to every niche market all at once. Listeners can peruse music stations from every decade and every genre; whether it’s alternative country or mainstream top 40 or anything else they are in the mood for. There are also news, talk, traffic, weather, sports and other types of entertainment channels.

All those choices do come at a price, but the cost of a satellite radio subscription to Sirius or XM makes it possible for them to offer commercial-free broadcasting. There are also opportunities for consumers to win free satellite radio through great satellite radio sweepstakes on the Internet. Whether consumers win satellite radio or purchase a satellite radio system with a small monthly fee, they will have a whole new world of radio to listen to. Consumers can either choose a monthly or yearly subscription fee to enjoy one of the satellite radio services. Sirius and XM are planning to merge by late 2007 or early 2008 as long as they can get clearance with the FCC. If this occurs, many of the services will probably be universal as well.

Automobile dealerships and manufacturers have also begun offering different types of incentives for consumers to get auto satellite radio. Many car dealers are giving three months or even up to six months of free satellite radio services to get car buyers in on the technology. Having an auto satellite radio allows drivers to get a clear station anywhere they go without switching around, which is safer. Drivers can listen to the same station or hundreds of other stations ranging from news, music and news in better quality than AM or FM bands. To receive the digital audio streams they just need a satellite radio antenna and receiver.

It may soon even be possible for satellite radio stations to broadcast pictures and videos directly to a car or home stereo with digital broadcasting. Receiving a satellite signal is completely digital; and digital signals sounds clean static-free. The satellite radio signal is encoded and sent to the satellite, then sent back to a receiver which decoded and plays the sound. The only reason listeners may lose the signal is because the satellites are traditional on the horizons, and drivers move along the Earth’s round surface. The signal never goes out on a satellite radio system for more than a couple moments, though. And the technology will just continue to improve as time goes by.

What You Should Know About Satellite Radio

Author: David Stone

Satellite Radio has become a very popular alternative to broadcast radio since its first release. It did take a while for the two competitors of satellite radio, Sirius and XM, to begin gaining customers. Equipment was expensive and bulky. There is also a monthly fee for the service, where broadcast radio is free. Satellite does have a few advantages against broadcast that helped it gain momentum more each year. There are very few channels on satellite radio that have commercials. This is very similar to premium cable television like HBO or Showtime...they cost extra but have no commercials. Another great feature Satellite Radio offers is quality that you cannot find in broadcast radio. Satellite radio is a digital signal that sounds cleaner and has virtually no static because with digital signals you either have close to full quality or nothing at all. Satellite also offers coast to coast coverage so you do not have to search for a local station when you travel.

Recent technology moves have helped the receiver end of satellite radio tremendously. Car manufacturers now offer satellite equipment built in to new cars so that there is nothing to buy, just the monthly service fee. Some car companies like GMC only offer XM capability, but many companies offer you to choose either but not both. Car manufacturers also offer much more high end stereos that can utilize the benefits of a digital signal. They use this as a sales pitch to show how good their stereos really are.

Satellite does have new competition that is broadcast for free like analog radio. HD Radio will be broadcast by many local stations in the near future offering better quality than satellite radio. This is much like television stations that broadcast HD TV locally. There are still commercials, but clear sound and music information about artists is available by any HD Radio equipped stereo. Only the future will tell if people are willing to shell out the dough to avoid commercials.

Satellite Radio the Next Wave

Author: Daniel Millions

Satellite is often considered one of the biggest improvements in broadcasting since the introduction of the FM band. Satellite radio is also called subscription radio or pay-radio because it is only available trough subscription to one of the satellite radio providing companies.

Satellite follows a concept similar to cable television by providing a very wide range of programs which are not available in the traditional FM or AM format for a fee.

Satellite uses satellites to deliver radio programs to subscribers. The radio signal is broadcasted from Earth based stations to communicational satellites, which then redirect the signal to satellite radio receivers. The radio signal is broadcasted by communication satellites to a much larger area than traditional terrestrial radio antennas.

For example, satellite is available al across the continental area of the United States. Satellite radio is available now in most parts of the world trough services provided by companies like WorldSpace (in Europe, Asia and Africa), Sirius and XM Radio (in North America).

The signal you receive using satellite radio is digital, which means that it is always clear and static-free, which is one of the great advantages of satellite radio. Another great thing about satellite is that it is almost completely commercial-free.

To begin listening to satellite radio you will need the actual satellite (also known as tuner or receiver), a satellite antenna (which is often incorporated in the satellite radio) and a subscription to the service you choose. There are several types of satellite from which you can choose.

One of them is the dedicated car or home radio, which play trough your car or home stereo. A second option is the plug-and-play radio, which can be used in your car, as well as in your home by paying a single subscription. Your third option is the portable radio, which has rechargeable battery, a built-in antenna and you can listen to it wherever you go using headphones.

The signals offered by different satellite radio companies are proprietary, which means that you will need different hardware for receiving, decoding and playback, depending on your subscription. Each satellite receiver has its own serial number called Radio ID.

When you get your subscription, you will also get an activation code for your receiver. Besides the actual radio programs, satellite transmits metadata that contains the name of the artist, the title of the song or program, as well as the name of the channel. This makes it easier for you to decide which channel to listen to and which program to choose.

Satellite radio services provide the subscriber with more than 100 programs that vary in content from rock and jazz to rap and classical music. But satellite utility reaches far beyond listening to your favorite music without the interruption of those annoying commercials.

Satellite also offers exclusive sports programs, cultural and educational shows, news and talk-shows. Some of the celebrities that have moved their shows from free radio to satellite radio include Howard Stern, Opie and Anthony, Bob Edwards and Martha Stewart. Unlike terrestrial radio, satellite is not affected by bad weather or even calamities.

At first, many people wondered why they should pay for radio if they can get it free. However, satellite radio attracts more and more people every year due to its great advantages: no commercials, extensive reach, theme programs and exceptional quality of sound.

The Easy Two Step Process For Getting Sirius Satellite Radio

Author: Jim Johnson

You have probably been hearing about satellite radio for a while and of course, lately there has been plenty of news about Howard Stwern setting up shop on Sirius and bringing his fan base along with him. So now you have decided that it's time to get on the bandwagon with this new technology and experience satelite radio for yourself.

If you live in the US you only have two choices for programming, XM and Sirius. In this article, we will discuss Sirius and the things you will need to do to sign up with them and receive their programming signal.

First of all, before you get started, make sure that Sirius is the provider that you really want. This is because once you decide on the provider or service, that will dictate which receiving equipment that you will need to purchase, and most importantly, once you have that equipment you will not be able to use it to change your subscription and receive the other provider's signal. So make your choice wisely here to avoid costly changes later on.

Now that you have definitely decided on Sirius as your satellite radio provider, here are the two simple steps that you need to do to start getting satellite radio:

1. Sign up for a monthly subscription with Sirius. It will cost about .95 a month if you pay on a monthly basis, but you can save money by buying the subsciption annually or even longer. So choose your plan and sign up.

2. Buy your receiving equipment. You will need a receiver and an antenna to start getting the signal. Your regular car radio will not be able to receive satellite radio unles it is specifically enabled for that purpose, so check your manuafcturers material to see about that first.

Before buying though, think about where you plan to listen tio your programming. Will you only be listening in your car? Then you probably only need a car receiver and antenna to get going. Just be sure that your receiving equipment matches the manufacturer of your car's radio. However, if you plan on listening at home too, you may need to get a plug-and-play type of unit that enables you to pull the receiver from your car when you get home and plug it into a home based unit to start receiving the signal through your home audio system. And if you need a portable unit for those times when you are neither at home or in the car, those are available as well. Prices for these units can vary considerably, but by shopping online you can usually get a very good deal on the equipment and have it installed locally if needed.

Once you have the equipment and the subscription, you are ready to start enjoying satellite radio whenever you want. Remember, it's always on and always available wherever you go.

Xm and Bmw Pair Up for the Ultimate Driving Experience

Author: Groshan Fabiola

XM Satellite Radio is the cream of the crop when it comes to the radio listening experience, with millions of American consumers already experiencing the service. Since XM is such a premium radio service, it only makes sense that they are teaming up with one of the top automobile manufacturers. XM Satellite Radio and BMW automobiles are teaming up to create the ultimate luxury driving experience. With XM Satellite Radio in the car, it’s even easier for BMW drivers to cruise the roads without having to switch stations to find a good tune.

One of the reasons that XM Satellite Radio is so complimentary to BMW automobiles is the equipment they offer. The XM Direct is a perfect example of this. This is a portable satellite radio tuner that can easily connect to a satellite-ready radio with an adaptor. New BMWs are either satellite-radio ready or come with a factory installed XM satellite radio tuner, which consumers can choose at purchase time. The XM Direct can also be easily adapted to an older BMW, so smart drivers don’t have to replace their old stereo system to enjoy a satellite radio tuner in their car.

BMW is one of the vehicle makes that is most compatible with the XM Direct, with special adaptors made for their models as well as for the Mini. They permit satellite radio-ready systems and aftermarket in-dash systems to pick up a full XM Satellite Radio subscription service. It doesn’t matter what type of BMW audio system is in the vehicle, drivers still receive the same digital sound. Since BMW is the ultimate driving machine, XM Satellite Radio is a perfect partner. And consumers don’t have to worry about bulky receivers or obvious satellite radio antennas that may take away from the sleek look of their vehicles. The XM Direct easily integrates into an existing stereo system or hides behind the dash.

There is very little difficulty involved in setting up an XM Direct system in most other automobiles, as well. With most factory-installed and aftermarket car stereos it only takes a few adaptor cables to install the satellite radio tuner. These can work with stereo components from major manufacturers such as Alpine, Kenwood, Pioneer and Sony. XM Satellite Radio & BMW are the only two companies that have such a successful relationship. XM Radio also easily installs in Chryslers, Dodges, Jeeps, Buicks, Cadillacs, GMCs, Minis, Pontiacs, and Saturns. They do not offer quite as many options, incentives and compatibility, but they do make it possible to receive auto satellite radio from XM without too much trouble.

Anyone in the market for a new BMW may be pleasantly surprised to find free XM with their new vehicle purchase. People who drive older BMWs, which last forever and never go out of style, can also enjoy the easiest installation of XM Direct in their cars to enjoy the same great satellite radio service. These two companies are making it easier to enjoy the best in satellite radio and the ultimate driving experiences all at once.

The Facts You Need To Know About Satellite Radio - Part 2

Author: Jim Johnson

In Part 1 of this report, we discussed how the technology of using satellites to broadcast radio signals from over 20,000 miles above the earth results in great reception throughout the US everywhere and all the time. But there is more.

Satellite radio is not free radio. It is subscription based, meaning that you pay a monthly fee for the service. The costs are very nominal though as Sirius costs .95 a month and XM is .95 a month. Neither of the subsciptions can be said to be expensive, but initially you may recoil from thwe idea of paying for something that you have gotten for free for so many years.

However, think about this. You weren't actually getting anything for free all this time. Think of how much time in your life has been wasted listening to ads or commercials on the radio instead of the programming that you tune in for. If you added it all up, it would no doubt be a huge chunk of time, and if your time is worth anything, you were definitely paying a price for tuning in. The radio stations have no other way of making radio broadcasting a profitable business, so you are stuck with putting up with ads for so many minutes of every hour just to be able to listen to the programming you want in between the commercials.

Satellite radio is following the proven business model example of cable television and instead of inundating you with ads, they just provide high quality programming all the time. No ads, no commercials, no wasting your time.

And what kind of programming do you get? Just about anything that you can imagine, and it's growing all the time. Your selections include music, talk radio, sporting events, kids programs, news and more. There are several celebrities that have set up shop in the studios of the satellite radio companies, including the high profile case of Howard Stern. But you can find even more celebrity specific programming from others like Martha Stewart, Jimmy Buffet, Eminem and more.

There are around 65 channels of music listening alone on each provider's service, and they cover almost every conceivable kind of music that is found in the US including rock, jazz, country, blues, reggae, and more. And there are several different kinds of each music genre as well, For instance, rock has channels devoted to hard rock, early rock, soft rock, heavy metal, and many more. Just pick your favorites and tune in for solid good music that you like to listen to wherever you go.

Be sure to read Part 3 for even more satellite radio facts.

Consumers Have a Choice With Satellite Radio

Author: <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" title="Groshan Fabiola" 'href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/'groshan-fabiola/3710">Groshan Fabiola

Making the switch from traditional radio to a satellite radio system requires more than just a few choices. The first and most important choice is which of the two satellite radio services to choose, and in the United States it’s between XM Radio and Sirius Satellite Radio. These two services have plans to merge by early next year, but for the meantime consumers must choose only one. The satellite radio system, accessories and subscription will all need to be from the same satellite radio provider.

When it comes down to it, the biggest difference between XM and Sirius is the programming choices. Both satellite radio services offer lots of channels, but there are a few different on-air personalities and sports programs that are exclusive to one of the providers. Consumers can easily go online to check the programming on either of the services’ Web sites. There are also great opportunities to win free XM or free Sirius on the Internet, which may obviously sway people’s preferences in one direction.

Basically, XM has 150 channels and Sirius has 120 channels. With a Sirius satellite radio system, consumers have access to 65 commercial-free music channels and 55 talk, news, sports and entertainment channels. XM, on the other hand, offers 67 music channels, many of which are commercial free. They also offer 30 other channels that stream similar choices to Sirius’ talk, news sports and entertainment channels. The number of other available channels on XM is subject to change. Both of the satellite radio services also offer weather and traffic to 20 major U.S. cities.

The big difference is the on-air personalities and sports programming that are offered at either XM or Sirius. Sirius has Howard Stern, for example, and XM has the first 24/7 channel to exclusively offer Major League Baseball. Consumers can easily compare the lineup at their Web sites.

The subscription cost for these satellite radio services is not too different. XM Radio is $12.95 per month, but consumers can get lower rates for longer commitments. Sirius Satellite Radio is $12.95 per month, and they also offer lower rates for longer pans. Consumers also have the options to cancel their XM or Sirius subscriptions at any time when they choose to go month-to-month for the full price. The difference here is that XM offers a pro-rated refund on longer plans and Sirius has a $75 dollar cancellation fee on prepaid subscriptions.

Both satellite radio services offer equipment options including a satellite radio system for permanent installation and a portable satellite radio for listening in the car, home or anywhere else. Each service offers comparable products in similar prices ranges, but they go by different names. Consumers must buy equipment that is compatible with their satellite radio subscription for the meantime, unless things change with the pending merger.

Both XM and Sirius have very functional Web sites where consumers can find out information, see programming schedules, read news, see subscription plans and activate their subscriptions. XM offers looped samples of their streams to Web visitors, so they can hear the listening possibilities. Sirius subscribers can listen to all the streams across the Web once they are issued a log-in password.

Whether it’s XM or Sirius, the satellite radio experience is a world apart from traditional radio. Maybe that’s because the broadcasts are streamed down to each satellite radio system from a location that actually is out of this world.

All About Satellite Radio

Author: <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" title="Daniel Millions" 'href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/'daniel-millions/5501">Daniel Millions

One of the great advantages of satellite radio is the fact that the programs are not interrupted by commercials. This is because the providers income comes from listeners and not from advertisers. Satellite radio services offer around 70 programs of commercial fee music channels each and you have a great variety of choices, from mainstream rock, hip-hop and dance music to folk music, opera, blues and many more.

Another great thing is the absence of static. You can be driving from the West Coast to the East Coast in the United States of America and you will not get any static at all on the way. The radio signal is digital, which means that you will get crystal-clear sound wherever you go.

Satellite radio tuners receive, along with the actual radio programs, an influx of metadata that consists of information regarding song title, artist, radio program and radio channel. This means that your satellite radio receiver will display all the necessary information about what you are listening to. For instance, if you hear a great song and you want to know which artist sings it, you just look at the receivers display.

All radio programs are uncensored. This is one of the reasons why artists like Howard Stern chose to move their shows on satellite radio. You can also listen to your favorite hip-hop songs without the interruption of those annoying beeping sounds.

Satellite radio programs also offer information about local traffic and weather conditions. The information is very detailed especially for those who live in big cities. If there is a major national calamity and other terrestrial radio stations will not work, you can always count on getting accurate information from satellite radio program. You can also listen to it online on your computer.

If you still are not convinced on why you should pay money for something that you can get for free, think about how much time you have wasted listening to commercials and all kinds of other boring stuff on terrestrial radio programs.

Traditional radio is not free, despite the popular belief. It is time-consuming and irritating because you have to listen to five minutes or more of commercials so that you can finally hear a song you like. The satellite radio subscriptions are very affordable and, for around 13 dollars per month, you get exactly the programs you want, which you can listen to wherever you are, at the best sound quality.

Satellite radio is great for you especially if you travel a lot. If you are traveling across the United States of America, for example, you can listen to the channel or channels you want during your whole trip, without losing signal or getting static. If you have a traditional radio, you will have to keep changing channels every hundred miles, but if you are using satellite radio you do not have to do that because the geographically availability of programs is not a problem. Satellite radio subscribers will soon get the chance to watch video programs as well.

Both Sirius and XM services have announced their intention of introducing in the near future a variety of video satellite channels that will have some of the great advantages that are currently available to satellite radio: commercial free programs, great quality of sound and vast geographical availability.
